Comparing editorial comments

Similarities

  • Small mastheads
  • Colum style - text based
  • Authoritative and persuasive tone
  • subheading- outline opinion
  • Based on current affairs
  • 2-3 different comment articles

Differences

  • Language - The guardian has more formal and topical language such as "bureaucracy" because their readers are thought to be well educated in politics but the daily mail has more informal dramatic language such as "chilling" and "terrifying".
  • The audience- the guardians audience is looking for a sturdy opinion which is fully explained and backed up whereas the daily mail audiences want an exciting not well explored opinion which is straight forward, highly biased and easy to read.
  • The guardian has a longer comment section because their audiences are interested and are eager to read a fully detailed explanation of what the writers opinions are whereas the daily mail has a shorter one because their audience want a quick and easy to read post which will hold their attention.
  • The daily mail use devices such as puns for example " Jeremys little helper" and alliteration in their titles to make them catchy and throughout the text to make it exciting where as the guardian uses facts and statistics to make theirs informative.
  • The daily mails column is more bias because their readers want a straight forward and clear opinion  where as the guardian has a less bias opinion as their readers like to read a column which explores every angle to reach a fair outcome (obviously they are both bias because they are opinions.)
  • The daily mails opinions are popular opinions among their readers so the opinions seem relatable and the reader finds something in common with the news paper whereas the guardians opinions are more controversial and they writers write them as if they are having a debate with the reader and they are describing their point.
  • Uses and gratification:
  • Identify: The guardian readers are high class/ middle high class where as the daily mail readers are low class. They return to the same newspaper because they identify with their opinions and views. Also the topics they pick to write about are things that they would be interested in and would converse about in real life.
  • Educate: Once they identify their audience they can right an opinion which educates the reader they could do this by writing about topics which their target audience would want to be educated on. To see what their audience would like to be educated on they could see what topics are most popular in their target audience.
  • Entertain:  The guardian readers would would enjoy reading a factual  informative opinion. The guardian give an informative take on news such as current affairs and politics because there readers are eager to learn about these topics and would like to read a well rounded less bias argument which gives them different perspectives and points of view on the topic. The daily  mail want to read an opinion which is easy to read and more straight forward. The daily mail has is a more entertaining within their comments as they dramatize topics such as politics which readers would find boring if they read the guardian. The daily mail writing about celebrities lives gives an escape to the readers own as it is focusing on a life which they would not lead which the may fantasize about, the daily mail use this by writing about them and making their lives seem more fairy tale like and dramatic than the regular reader of the daily mail.
  • By many people reading news they share common knowledge which is sparks conversation as they all have different opinions they would like to share and would like to hear different opinions to widen their knowledge and to challenge their own opinions. Comment pieces make the readers feel as if they are part of the newspaper and help them identify with it more. Also it makes them feel like they have a voice and the media isn't just publishing their own opinions. If a reader has the same opinion as a comment they could feel as if they identify more with the newspaper  because either readers have the same opinion as them. The comment section in the daily mail may be more of a thing for readers to laugh at the comments than to share ideas where as the guardians comment section is formal and its purpose is for readers to share their ideas. The comments could be negotiated position because the comments may not agree with what they newspaper is saying.
