Media Language and Representation: Example Question (The Big Issue).

Big issue essay Question: How does intertextuality create meaning in this source.

They have put politicians heads onto the bodies on the members of Abbas body, by doing this they are mocking these people who are important figures in the EU referendum. They purposely put pictures of them with their mouths open so it looks like they are singing. heir heads being larger than the bodies show how they are the main focus of the magazine and not Abba also it makes it humorous and adds to the comical tone of the front cover.

The intertextuality in the headline of the magazine the title " the winner takes it all" is referencing an ABBA song, this links into the situation ans one pf the four figures in the front page will win, the big issue is portraying the situation this is that the audience wouldn't understand the pun which is an Abba song or who the faces bodies are.  Abba is a well known group in Britain so most people will understand the inter-textual relationship.

They have then added speech marks onto their heads which famous quotes from their most popular song which references what each politicians view on brexit is.There quotes show which side, Nigel Farages says "take a chance"this refers directly to the risk involved leaving the e, the picture the big issue has chosen of Nigel Farrage conveys a crazed facial expression. Boris Johnsons quote is "This time were through" the big issue is conveying that Boris Johnson is treating the situation as a personal and immature relationship, this then also conveys that he does not take the  referendum seriously. shas the same perspective because hes saying that he thinks that Britain is through (or will leave the EU). David Cameron's quote is "knowing me and Knowing EU" this quote paired with the confidant stance he has reflects how confident he was in his perspective on whats going to happen as he was sure that Britain wasn't going to leave the EU. Nicola Sturgeon quote is "breaking up is never easy, i know" this refers to her past experience as she was an important figure in the Scottish independence, through she has learnt that it is hard.

They have also put a glitter globe which is a disco ball which were popular in that era in the top right corner which is a reference to Britain leaving the EU, the globe is purposely placed so that Europe is showing, the glitter globe highlights the fascicle nature of the situation. The background is sparkly mimics a stage. There is a desk which a pen and a peace of paper which is referring to voting again. There is a faint outline of a form in the background of the front cover which is the sheet of paper which is what people fill in when they vote for brexit.

David Cameron and have been put at the main members of Abba and they are in the center of the  magazine this may be because they are the some of the main people in the argument because they have the most influence or because they are the most famous therefore making them recognizable.
